Brief History of the Hellenic Institute for Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Chrysoula Kostogiannis, as a psychology graduate student at Hofstra University in New York, first became familiar with Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, from her professor and then Chairperson of the Psychology Department: Dr. Howard Kassinove. With her professor’s encouragement, and given the fact that she was in New York at that time, she started her training at the Albert Ellis Institute, completing the Primary Certificate in 1991. This was also the beginning of a 10-year training process, which was completed with her post-doctoral training in 2000 and as a REBT supervisor and trainer in 2001.
Given that she was practicing psychology in Greece since 1994, as a professor and in private practice, Dr. Kostogiannis realized the need and established an affiliated training center in Athens, which would bring Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy back to its philosophical roots, Greece and abroad. Thus, in 2003, she started the Hellenic Institute for Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as an extension of her professional private practice. Over a decade, Dr. Kostogiannis has supervised the professional training of many mental health professionals in Greece, while she has offered support, counseling and therapy to thousands of individuals with varying mental, health, educational and work-related issues. Moreover, for the last 10 years, the Hellenic Institute for Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy offers accredited training programs including: a) Training and Supervision programs in Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Adults and more recently b) Training and Supervision programs in Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Education with Children & Adolescents with co-trainer Dr. Demetris Katsikis, Ph.D., School and Developmental Psychologist and Rational-Emotive and Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist and Supervisor. In addition, the Hellenic Institute offers intensive and brief RECBT trainings and more recently Rational-Emotive Behavioral Coaching trainings.
The Hellenic Institute for Rational Emotive & Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the only Albert Ellis - Affiliated Training Center in Greece
The Hellenic Institute also provides responsible and empirically-based assessment and therapy services with individuals (adults, children, adolescents), couples, family and groups as well as low cost services for the community through its supervised training programs.
Since January of 2014, the Hellenic Institute has extended its actions beyond provision of educative and therapeutic programs. Specifically, the coordinator of Institute’s services, Dr. Demetris Katsikis, coordinates a series of programmatic, research and educational programs which interconnect the Hellenic Institute with the community and society. Through actions which connect prevention with therapy and according to the collaboration between experts of education, health and of all people who are interested in health and education provision, the Hellenic Institute aims to provide extensions of collaborations and services to all people.
